Yarn

I’m using Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Pink.

Stitches

This cardigan is very simple to make as it only uses two basic stitches for the lace, the double crochet and the half double crochet. It looks more intricate than it really is, because of the double crochet stitches that are crossed over each other. And then the lace egding is made with trebles and slip stitches.

Pattern Notes

  • Project Level: Easy!
  • As you’re making row#1 in the Bottom Section, you’re facing the right side / front of the work.
  • If you have any questions, check the video tutorial (link below).
  • The long sequence of numbers in the pattern corresponds to the 9 sizes starting from XS and ending with 5X, with XS being placed first and then others arranged in ascending order in brackets and separated by commas.
  • UPDATE (May’20): Hey everyone! A little update. Please check that you’re happy with the length of your cardigan, because on reflection perhaps I should have made it a bit longer for larger sizes (2X – 5X). I think that everything else like the width etc is very good (I spend a long time on my calculations). Here it goes, I added a few extra rows for the length. So for the kimono to be approx 21 (21, 22, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28) inches long, make 17 (17, 19, 19, 19, 21, 21, 23, 23) rows in the Bottom Section and 15 (15, 15, 15, 16, 17, 18, 18, 19) rows in the Top Section, which means you will need 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10) skeins. Everything else is still the same. Have fun!

Pattern Overview

  1. Make the Back Piece, the Front Piece (Left) & the Front Piece (Right).
  2. Seam the shoulders and sides.

1.Make Back Piece, Left & Right Front Pieces

Make the back piece, the front piece (left) and the front piece (right) as instructed below. Each piece has the bottom section and the top section. This is because you have different kinds of (uncomplicated) lace and also the top section is wider and is used to make the sleeves.

Pattern Repeat

Back Piece

BOTTOM SECTION

With Pink, chain 51 (54, 60, 66, 72, 81, 84, 87, 93)(a multiple of 3). The stitch count (in row 1 & Bottom Section) is base ch minus 1.

Row#1 (right side) Hdc to 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next st and every st, t.

TOP SECTION

Without breaking the yarn, ch 19 (a multiple of 3 + 1).

Row#4 Dc into 5th ch from hook, dc in next st, dc in ch before first dc, *skip next st, dc-flo in next st twice, dc-flo in skipped st (when you work into the chain, work in any loops); rep from *. Last st is top of ch-2 and you end with a dc in the skipped st, not dc to top of ch-2. Ch 18, t.

Row#5 Dc into 5th ch from hook, dc in next st, dc in ch before first dc, *skip next st, dc in next st twice, dc in skipped st; rep from *, dc to top of ch-3, t.

Row#6 Ch 3 (counts as dc), skip crocheting in same st and next st, dc in next st twice, dc in st just before first dc, *skip next st, dc in next st twice, dc in skipped st; rep from *, dc to top of ch-3, t.

Rep row#6 until you have 15 (15, 15, 15, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16) (any number of) rows in the Top Section counting on the left when facing the front (you will have one less row on the right but that’s okay). Top Section complete, fasten off.

Front Piece (Left)

With Pink, ch 24 (24, 27, 30, 33, 39, 39, 42, 45) (a multiple of 3). Complete the Bottom Section. Ch 18 (a multiple of 3).

Row#7 Dc into 5th ch from hook, dc in next st, dc in ch before first dc, *skip next st, dc-flo in next st twice, dc-flo in skipped st (when you work into the chain, work into any loops); rep from *, dc-flo in last st, t.

Rep row#6 until you have 15 (15, 15, 15, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16) rows in the Top Section counting on the left when facing the front. Top Section complete, fasten off.

Front Piece (Right)

With Pink, ch 24 (24, 27, 30, 33, 39, 39, 42, 45) (a multiple of 3). Complete the Bottom Section. Rep row#2 but skip crocheting dc-flo in last st. Ch 18, t. Rep row#5. Rep row#6 until you have 14 (14, 14, 14, 15, 15, 15, 15, 15) rows in the Top Section counting on the right when facing the front. Top Section complete, fasten off.

2. Seam Shoulders & Sides

Seam shoulders and loop the yarn through the few middle stitches between the shoulder seams at the back of the neck. And seam the sides.

3. Add Lace Edging

Add lace edging to the bottom, front and sleeves as follows.

Starting at the bottom of the cardigan and on the right side, find a point to start (such as between front and back pieces) and join Pink with the slip stitch join.

Bottom – *Tr in next st three times (align the three trebles with the three dc-flo in each cluster from row#2), sl st in space between hdc posts after last tr; rep from *, end with a tr in the last st.

Front – Sl st for every space behind end-of-row post in hdc rows, 3 tr for every space behind end-of-row post in dc cluster rows (like in row#2) in the Bottom Section. In the Top Section and the sleeves, continue with the pattern of alternating between 3 tr and sl st in each space. Around the neck, match your three tr with the three sts in each cluster and make sl st between clusters.

4. Make The Belt

Try your crochet lace kimono cardigan on. If you’d like to add a belt, decide its position (choose a row with dc clusters like in row#2, because the spaces between the clusters make it perfect for lacing a belt through).

With Pink, ch 127 (133, 148, 163, 178, 196, 202, 208, 226). Follow row#5 and make a dc in the last st, fasten off.

This makes for a belt that’s approx 42 (44, 49, 54, 59, 65, 67, 70, 76) inches long.
